TWL06 vs SOWPODS — Which Dictionary?
Scrabble uses two main competitive dictionaries. Choosing the right one is essential because a word valid in one may be challenged off the board in the other.
| TWL06 | SOWPODS | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Tournament Word List 2006 | Collins Scrabble Words |
| Where used | USA & Canada tournaments | UK, Australia, most international events |
| Word count | ~178,000 words | ~279,000 words |
| Extra words | — | ~50,000 more than TWL06 |
| Best for | North American casual & competitive play | International & UK play |
If you are unsure, choose SOWPODS — it is a superset of TWL06 and will show more word options, including shorter words and unusual spellings common in British English.
Scrabble Strategy Tips
- Play on bonus squares. Double Word Score (DWS) and Triple Word Score (TWS) squares can multiply your entire word score. Prioritise them, especially for high-value tiles.
- Learn 2-letter words. Words like QI, ZA, XI, AX, OX allow you to place difficult letters and score multiple words in one turn using parallel plays.
- Aim for 7-letter bingos. Using all 7 rack tiles earns a 50-point bonus. Keep balanced racks (a mix of vowels and consonants) to maximise bingo chances.
- Manage vowel-heavy racks. If you have too many vowels, play words that use 3–4 of them. Short vowel-heavy words like AUDIO, QUEUE, ADIEU are useful dumps.
- Save S tiles for big plays. S tiles allow you to pluralise any noun already on the board, scoring that word again. Hold S for a turn when a premium-square word is available.
- Block your opponent. Avoid opening lines to TWS squares for the opponent, especially if your score is ahead. Sometimes a lower-scoring safe play is better than a higher-risk one.

What is a bingo in Scrabble?
A bingo is when you play all 7 tiles from your rack in one turn, earning a 50-point bonus in addition to the word score. Consistent bingo play separates casual and expert Scrabble players.
Why are two-letter words so important in Scrabble?
Two-letter words let you form hook words — adding a letter to an existing word to make two words simultaneously. They also let you unload awkward tiles (like QI for Q, ZA for Z) without needing common companion letters.
Q Without U — Valid Scrabble Words
The Q tile (10 pts) is the hardest to play because it almost always pairs with U. But both TWL06 and SOWPODS include a small set of valid Q-without-U words. Memorising these can save you from being stuck with Q late in the game:
| Word | Pts | Dictionary | Meaning (brief) |
|---|---|---|---|
| QI | 11 | TWL06 & SOWPODS | Life energy in Chinese philosophy (also spelled chi) |
| QAT | 12 | SOWPODS | Variant of khat (an African shrub) |
| QOPH | 18 | TWL06 & SOWPODS | 19th letter of the Hebrew alphabet |
| QANAT | 15 | SOWPODS | Underground irrigation channel (Middle East) |
| QIGONG | 16 | SOWPODS | Chinese system of physical exercises |
| TRANQ | 14 | TWL06 & SOWPODS | Informal for tranquillizer |
| QWERTY | 21 | SOWPODS | Standard keyboard layout |
Tip: QI is the most useful — it is short, scores 11 pts, and can hook with many letters already on the board. Play it on a Double Letter Square under the Q for 21 pts.
